Why people look for a Wix alternative
Wix is a capable, well known website builder with a large template library and an app market. People usually start looking elsewhere for practical reasons rather than because the product is bad:
- The editor feels like too much. Free placement of elements gives control, but also means more time spent aligning things on desktop and mobile.
- The monthly cost grows. Plan prices, paid apps and add-ons can add up over time. Check the current Wix pricing page and add up every app you use.
- Moving away later is awkward. Like most hosted builders, a Wix site cannot simply be exported and run elsewhere, so a later move means rebuilding.
- Data location questions. Some European businesses prefer, or are asked by clients, to keep their website and form data hosted in the EU.
- Enquiries go nowhere useful. Form submissions arrive as emails or sit in a dashboard, separate from how the business tracks customers.
If one of these is your reason, it should drive your comparison. A full side by side of three common options is in our Wix vs Squarespace vs AI website builder guide; this page focuses on the criteria.
The four things to compare
1. Ownership: domain, content and exit
Your domain name should be registered in your name, or at least transferable to you without fuss. Ask each provider:
- Is the domain registered to me, and can I move it to another registrar?
- Can I download my text and images if I leave?
- What happens to my site if I stop paying: is it deleted immediately or held for a period?
Hosted builders rarely let you take the design with you, so the realistic exit is: keep your domain, keep your words and photos, rebuild elsewhere. That is fine as long as you know it up front.
2. Hosting location and data handling
Under the GDPR, personal data from your contact forms needs proper handling wherever it is stored. Many large builders host outside the EU and rely on legal transfer mechanisms. That can be lawful, but some businesses prefer EU hosting because it is simpler to explain to clients and in a privacy notice. Ask where the site and form submissions are stored, and whether a data processing agreement is available. The European Commission's data protection pages at commission.europa.eu explain the general rules; our GDPR checklist covers the website side.
3. Cost structure, not just the headline price
Compare the total monthly cost for what you actually need, not the cheapest plan on the pricing page. Watch for:
- Introductory prices that rise at renewal.
- Annual billing shown as a monthly figure.
- Paid apps for things like forms, bookings or extra languages.
- Domain costs after a free first year.
- Transaction fees if you sell online.
- Paid support tiers.
4. What happens to enquiries
For most service businesses, the website exists to produce enquiries. Ask what happens after someone fills in your form. Does it just send an email, or is the enquiry stored with the person's details so you can follow up, see history and avoid losing it in an inbox? This is often overlooked when comparing builders, yet it affects how many enquiries turn into paying work.
Types of alternative
| Type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Other drag and drop builders | People who like visual control and a big template choice | Similar lock-in and app costs to Wix |
| Design-led builders | Portfolios, studios and visual brands | Fewer integrations, can be strict on layout |
| WordPress with hosting | Full ownership and flexibility, large plugin choice | Updates, security and maintenance are your job or a paid service |
| AI website builders | Getting a complete, sensible site quickly with little design work | Drafts need editing so they sound like you |
| Hiring a web designer | Custom needs and businesses with budget | Higher upfront cost and dependence on one person |
Do not forget support
Whichever type you lean towards, find out who helps when something goes wrong. Some providers offer only a help centre and community forum, some offer chat or email, and some include personal help with set-up. If you are not technical, a person who can connect your domain or fix a broken form is worth more than another hundred templates. Ask how support is reached, in which languages, and whether it costs extra.
Also think about the next two or three years. If you expect to hire staff, add a booking system or start selling online, check whether each alternative can grow with you or whether you would be facing another move.
If you are weighing the last option, see website builder or web designer.
A short shortlist method
- Write down the three things that annoy you about your current setup.
- Write down the pages and features you genuinely use. Most small businesses use fewer than they think.
- Pick two or three alternatives that solve your top annoyance.
- Try each with your real homepage text for twenty minutes, on your phone as well as a laptop.
- Calculate the honest total monthly cost of each, including anything you would need to add.
- Check ownership and hosting answers in writing, on their website or by email.
Switching without losing what you have
If your current Wix site already gets visitors from search, plan the move. Keep the same domain, list your existing page addresses, and set up redirects from old addresses to the matching new ones. Our guide on moving a website without losing rankings walks through it.
One alternative to consider is The Website Builders: a complete site from six questions, €29.95 a month on your own domain, hosted in the EU, with every form enquiry stored as a client record in BonusFlow and set-up help from a real person included. Whichever you choose, compare on ownership, hosting, total cost and enquiries, and the right option tends to become obvious.
Frequently asked
Can I move my Wix site to another builder?
Not directly. Hosted builders generally do not export designs, so you keep your domain, copy your text and images, and rebuild on the new platform with redirects from old page addresses.
Is a Wix website GDPR compliant?
Compliance depends on how you use any builder: your privacy notice, consent for tracking and how you handle form data. Check the provider's data processing terms and hosting location.
What is the cheapest Wix alternative?
The cheapest headline price is rarely the cheapest overall. Add up apps, domain renewal, renewal pricing and any features you need before comparing.
Do I lose my domain if I leave Wix?
If the domain is registered in your name you can transfer it or point it elsewhere. Check where it is registered and that you have access to that account.
